Crime Fiction: From Poe to the Present (Writers & Their Work Literary Conversations Series)
Published in Paperback by Univ Pr of Mississippi (December, 1997)
Average review score:

The Crime Genre and its Bests! An Excellent book which travels from the birth of the crime genre to the forms and fabrications it has taken today. The book talks about the sub-genres of crime fiction and thier characteristics. It goes from the superhuman Sherlock Holmes to the more realistic Hard-boiled Detective of the 1920's. A great book for people undertaking studies in crime literature and provides essential literary criticism of the crime genre.

Crystals the Journey Begins
Published in Paperback by ()
Average review score:

Crystals with PersonalityFrom the start, this book sets itself apart from the dry and tedious by telling the author's story of how he progressed from an unaware typical male to an informed crystal healer. It's a fascinating account of an awakening that took place over several years, leading to an in-depth knowledge of crystals, how to handle them, how to use them, and the esoteric knowledge that accompanies a full understanding of the power of the crystal. In a very short book Mr. Gardiner manages to include a detailed description of each crystal alphabetically arranged for ease of use, as well as a comprehensive guide to other esoteric areas of interest, such as meditation, divination, the aura, chanelling, dowsing and healing. This makes it a perfect beginner's book, but its charisma makes it an interesting read for all levels. No wonder it's in its third reprint!

Good storyThis was a very good book which I have been looking for 2 years. Very exciting story with lots of magic and history thrown in. I have read all three of J.B.'s novels and love them all. Couldn't put it down! This is a book I will read many times.

Descent into Discourse: The Reification of Language and the Writing of Social History (Critical Perspectives on the Past)
Published in Hardcover by Temple Univ Press (February, 1990)
Average review score:

A cogent marxist analysis, but...This book is above all a defence of Historical Materialism and of the marxist methodology - with a emphasis on classes and concrete class interests - in the writing of History, as opposed to the Structuralist analysis centered on self-sufficient discursive cathegories. It's issue-ordered, with Marxist and Structuralist methodologies contrasted on a issue-to-issue analysis, namely as applied to research on political history, class history, gender, race, and so on. The analysis is cogent and polemical. However, there is something amiss. The emergence of a discourse-based historiograph must be explained by a marxist as something dependent on a concrete and clear-cut class interest, and the author does not explain in whose interest this type of historiograph has developed - which is much more than to merely asess and explain its un-Marxist ccharacter. Anyway, it's a work of reference for all interested in the analysis of methodological issues in the Social Sciences in general, and History in particular.

The Dream Stealer
Published in Hardcover by Clarion Books (21 October, 2002)
Average review score:

Pasha and Lisette ask Baba Yaga to help destroy Blood PrinceThis wonderful novel written by Gregory Miguire is sure to enchant. The basic idea is for Pasha and Lisette, two village kids, to destroy the Blood Prince as it reeks havoc in nearby villages and on trains. This story is magical, but some people may not enjoy all of the dialogue. I really like the characters because you get to know the story behind them. I also think it is good that the author made it a girl and boy team. Pasha is a very brave boy ,yet he knows he can't do too much thanks to his short tempered grandfather. Lisette always thinks about her mother even though she has to be the one in her house who cooks, cleans, and takes care of her baby brother while her father does his best to earn money for his family. I really enjoyed the story. I know if you read it you'll like it too.

Drums of Terror: Voodoo in the Cinema
Published in Paperback by Midnight Marquee Pr Inc (01 July, 1998)
Average review score:

a unique reference-book for the film-freakAs far as I know, there is no other filmbook covering Voodoo in the Cinema (there are some Zombie-film-books, but this is not the same as you know...) For any (horror-fantasy-)filmbook-freak this is a unique reference book with a nearly complete filmography from silentfilms till today

Ecosystem Health : New Goals for Environmental Management
Published in Paperback by Island Press (October, 1992)
Average review score:

Good discussions, if a bit outdatedThis book provides a nice collection of essays on ecosystem health from philosophical, scientific, ethical, and practical viewpoints. A nice, focused discussion of Aldo Leopold's land ethic is given by his most famous advocate, J. Baird Callicot. Eugene Hargrove also offers a succinct but cogent analysis of using economics to "solve" environmental problems and offers up the idea of using existentialism as a pragmatic way to give meaning and value to seemingly intractable environmental issues. The second half of the book gets more technical in attempting to measure ecosystem health, but for the professional or academic ecologist, this should be insightful. Being over 10 years old, of course, some of the ideas and approaches, especially in the second half of the book, may seem slightly out-of-date, but that does not detract from the value of the book as a good collection of essays centered around a very important and persistent issue facing us at multiple spatial and temporal scales.

Emily Bronte (Writers & Their Work)
Published in Paperback by Northcote House Pub Ltd (January, 1999)
Average review score:

Lots of Interesting Info! This book provides a lot of interesting information regarding Emily Bronte's life. In particular, it deals with how her experiences affected her writing, specifically her novel Wuthering Heights. At times it was a little difficult to read, and got somewhat dry, but overall gave a lot of insight into the origins of this fascinating author's short career. If you're looking for information on Emily's life and writing that will highlight connections between the two, this book will definitely help!

Exalted: The Lunars
Published in Hardcover by White Wolf Publishing Inc. (November, 2002)
Average review score:

Exalted's second hardcover sourcebook is finally here!Exalted: the Lunars is the second hardcover sourcebook for White Wolf's exciting Exalted RPG. The book starts with an introduction vignette, featuring several characters from the main rulebook. Next are two chapters of background, one about the Lunar Exalted themselves and their society and the other about the barbarian tribes they usually come from (and, in some cases, lead). I particularly enjoyed the shapeshifting Charms, numerous amounts of which are detailed in the book, along with two-page write-ups for each Caste similar to the Solar Castes in the main rulebook and the Dragon-Blooded Aspects in Exalted: the Dragon-Blooded (which is also a superbly-written book that I highly recommend). The book also contains an entire chapter of storytelling ideas (for those of you who aren't familiar with White Wolf's games...the Storyteller is similar to a Dungeon Master or Game Master) with info on how to possibly integrate the other types of Exalted into a Lunars story.
The one thing I didn't like about this book was the fact that it's a slight bit shorter than Exalted: the Dragon-Blooded, although it does cover the Lunar Exalted in much detail.
